Isaac/3w? Brooks, according to Robert Peacock Brooks, was a constable on the south side of Cohansey River, Fairfield, NJ, 1707 and 1720.1 The author comments, "I can not verify that Isaac is a son of Josiah, but since he served as a constable on the South side of the Cohansey in 1707 and 1720, and as there were no other members of a Brooks family in that section other than the family of Josiah, I am of the opinion that he is a son."1
I find that parentage chronologically impossible. Josiah, the author's candidate for Isaac's father, was not born until 1681. A son of Josiah would have been no more than a young boy, if even born, by 1707. Since the Brooks families in the area all descended from Capt. Timothy/2 of Cohansey, Isaac was more likely a late son of Capt. Timothy/2w Brooks and his 2d wife Mehitabel/2 Mowry, and is so placed here. Thus Josiah would be Isaac's brother, not father. One problem with this identification is that Isaac is unmentioned in Timothy's will.
Isaac, as a son of Timothy, must have been born either in the narrow window between his siblings Rebecca (5 Oct 1679) and Josiah (26 Aug 1681) — that is, in 1680 — or after Josiah. The importance of the office of constable which he held in 1707 suggests the earlier birth date.
A second possible identity of the Fairfield constable is that of his 1st cousin Isaac/3w Brooks Jr. (son of Isaac/2w, Timothy's brother), who disappears from Woburn, MA vital records after 1696. This is problematical, as one Hannah Brooks, believed to be the Woburn man's widow, (re)married at Woburn in 1702.
