Sgt. Samuel/2 Wright Jr. may have been born 30 Oct 1632 at Wrightsbridge, Essex, England.2 He came with his parents to New England, where he married, 24 Nov 1653 at Springfield, MA, Elizabeth/2 Burt, daughter of Henry/1 Burt and Ulalia/1 Marche.1,3 (Their siblings Judah Wright and Mercy Burt also married.).
Some months prior to marriage, Samuel Wright had conceived a daughter, born probably early 1654, with his future wife's younger sister Mary, who married William/1 Brooks the following October.4 Charged by Mary/2 Burt as the father of her child, Samuel requested a jury trial, held 24 Mar 1654. The verdict of the Jury: Wee fynd Samuel Wright Junior guilty of committinge wickedness with Mary Burt in having the use of her body 3 severall tymes, whereby wee fynd him to be the father of the said child: Whereuppon the said Samuell Wright was ordered and adjudged to be the reputed father of the said child: And for his evill behaviour therein to be whipped with 12. stripes on the naked body well layd on: And to pay the charges of the Court, and towards the mayntenance of the said child to pay after the rate of One shillinge four pence per week makeing payment every month, dureinge the tearme of Seaven yeares, and at the end of Seaven yeares to pay Forty shillings towards the putting of the child forth to be an apprentice and in the meane while to give good Security vizt a bond for 4£ with Sufficient Suretyes to perform this Order.4 Samuel's punishment took place 28 May 1654. Mary Burt, who was sentenced to 12 lashes for fornication with Samuel Wright, and a further 10 lashes for the same offense with Joseph Bond, was ordered to keep the child, who was raised as Remembrance Brooks and married James Brown.4
Samuel Wright was one of 30 Northampton residents who, in 1671, petitioned the General Court for leave to establish a plantation at Squakheag (later Northfield), having already purchased the land from the Indians.5 The following year, he was one of those who successfully re-petitioned for the grant of Squakheag.6
Upon the outbreak of hostilities in Philip's War, Major John Pynchon sent a squad of 20 soldiers to garrison Northfield, under Samuel Wright's command. But as Pynchon wrote the Connecticut council on 22 Aug 1675, "a guard of 20 left at Squakeak is too weak."7 Samuel Wright and seven other men were killed in the first Indian attack on Squakheag, 2 Sep 1675. "It was the season for drying their flax; and ignorant of what had happened the day before to their neighbors at Deerfield, our people went about their work as usual on that morning. Both the soldiers and settlers appear to have been scattered in the meadows and homelots, when the assault was made."8
He "left eight children, one born ten days after his death" (who was named Benoni).9,10 His widow married (2), 1684, Nathaniel/2 Dickinson Jr. of Hatfield, who survived her.1
