       John/3u Brooks, according to Savage, was born in 1657, son of Joshua and Hannah, though Concord records do not show it.1 According to Bond and Torrey, John Brooks married, 8 Nov 1682 at Watertown, Deborah/4? Garfield, daughter of Samuel/3 Garfield and Mary Benfield, but I find no Watertown marriage record.2,3 A John Brooks did marry, 8 Nov 1682 at Sudbury, Hannah/4? Garfield, daughter of Joseph/3 Garfield and Sarah/3 Ball.4 Bond and Torrey say he died 18 May 1697, but again I do not find such a record at Watertown. Weston records do not begin until 1707. Bond says he d. without issue.5,6 Sudbury town records indicate that John Brooks died there 4 Aug 1713.7
     "The John Brooks listed by Bond as an eldest son [of Joshua] was an error," says Threlfall. "He was son of Timothy, Henry, and d. at Sudbury 4 Aug. 1713.". I believe Threlfall is correct in refuting Bond's placement of John Brooks as a son of Joshua, but the identity of the man who died at Sudbury remains a mystery. Whatever his ancestry, he evidently had no children.8
