Pvt. Thaddeus/4s Brooks was born 16 Sep 1756 at Northfield, MA.2,1 His name, as well as that of his brother Alpheus, is found in the muster rolls of Capt. Samuel Merriman's company, Col. Phinehas Wright's Regt., Expedition to Northern Department in Response to the Call of Gen. Gates, Sept. 22–Oct. 18, 1777. "This company took part in the battle of Oct. 7, and was present at the surrender of Burgoyne, Oct. 17."3,4,5,6 Reenlisted for the Ticonderoga campaign, 1779, being mustered out 31 Dec of that year.7 In June, 1780, "The town voted to hire the 12 men required as the town's quota in the present expedition, and hire money to pay the same. He married (2?), by 1800, Elizabeth (–?–).9
21 May 1818, Thaddeus Brooks, "aged 61 & 62 years," of Cato, NY, deposed for the purpose of obtaining a Revolutionary pension. Key sentences in the copy of this document which the author has seen are illegible due to apparent water damage along one fold, but he states that in Jan 1776 he enlisted at Northfield in Capt. Millen's company, Col. Ward's regt. The legible text resumes with mention of King's company, Col. Brooks's regt., then states he was afterwards transferred to Col. [Shepard's] regiment and afterwards to Col. Jackson's regiment; that he continued to serve in the said corps until the war ended in 1783, when he was discharged from service at Fort Constitution (opposite West Point, NY); and that he was at the taking of Burgoyne, the retreat from New York, the battle of White Plains, and the taking of Cornwallis.10
He again deposed for pension purposes at Cato 18 Sep 1821, this time signing by mark. He stated that he enlisted, 1782, as a private soldier for the term of three years under Capt. King in Col. Brooks's 7th Massachusetts regiment; that he served in said line until 1784 and was then discharged at Fort Constitution; that previous to the above service he was in the Revolutionary Army as much as a year, and during that time was at the capture of Burgoyne and in several skirmishes. He states he is a farmer, unable to work because of debility, and that his household includes wife Elizabeth, 55, and children Augustus, 21, in tolerable health; Mary, 17, able to support herself; and Elizabeth, 14, in good health. His property schedule includes an ax, dish kettle, teacups and saucers, 4 old chairs, and a Bible, Psalm book and some other old books; property in all valued at $3.25, against debts of $20.50.9
His name was inscribed on the pension roll of New York at the rate of $8 per month, to commence 1 Mar 1823. Certificate of Pension was issued 17 Apr 1824 and sent to John Greene Esqr, Auburn, NY. A subsequent marginal note in the pension file reads, "Let to T. Popple Sept. 9, 1840 … not entitled — Married in the Year 1800.—."6
