Capt. Jonas/2 Prescott was born in 1648 [June, per Groton rec.] at Lancaster, MA.1,2 In 1667, his father contracted with the town of Groton to build the town a grist mill in exchange for 520 acres of land. He did so on a site now in the bounds of Harvard. He placed Jonas in charge, and later deeded the lands and mill to him.3 Jonas married, 14 Nov 1672 at Lancaster, Mary Loker of Sudbury, daughter of John Loker and Mary (–?–).4,5 "He resided at Groton and Forge Village."6 He died at Groton 31 Dec 1723.7 There she died 28 Oct 1735.8 They are buried in the Old Cemetery in present-day Shirley.9
"He was a blacksmith by trade, and owned the mill in the south part of Groton, now within the limits of Harvard. It is said that a grant of land made by the town, about the year 1675, when it was much in need of a blacksmith, induced him to remove nearer to the village. He built a house and shop on the lot, which was situated on the easterly side of James's Brook, perhaps a third of a mile south of Lawrence Academy. He bought lands, until he became one of the largest owners of real estate in the town … Jonas filled many important positions in the town, and represented it in the General Court during the years 1699 and 1705 …."10
