Pvt. Levi/5g Brooks was born circa 27 Jan 1757, probably at Glastonbury, CT, although the record is not found.3 Family history says he was a Revolutionary soldier, and at the battle of Bunker Hill, 17 Jun 1775, but he is not found in Revolutionary War pension records, or in the war records of the state of Massachusetts.4 Levi Brooks of Glastonbury is found with his cousin Elijah ("Elizur") on a list of men who marched from Connecticut "for the Relief of Boston in the Lexington Alarm," April, 1775, 4 days in service.3 Connecticut state records show that he and his brother Thomas served as privates in Capt. Hale's company of state troops in 1776.5 He married, by 1779, Lydia Buck.6,2 He owned the covenant, 21 Feb 1779, and was admitted to communion with the church at Glastonbury.7 23 Mar 1779, Levi and Lydia Brooks transferred "a certain piece of land situated in said Glastenbury in the Parish of Eastbury containing three acres of land to their honorable father Thomas."2
By 1788 the household had moved northward up the Connecticut River to that section of Greenfield, MA, which is now the town of Gill. Their 1790 census household at Greenfield included Levi, three males under 16 (sons Levi, Pelatiah and Bethuel), and four females (wife Lydia and daughters Hannah, Lydia and Polly).8 Sometime after 1800 Levi joined his brother Thomas at Plymouth, NY, and was chosen one of three fence viewers at the first town meeting, 3 Mar 1807.9
Mentioned in the will of his brother Thomas, 12 Sep 1822.10,11
"Levi was a farmer in good circumstances — lived and died in Norwich."4,3 Levi and Lydia are buried in Aldrich Cemetery, Norwich, NY.3,12 His gravestone reads, Levi Brooks A Revolutionary Soldier Died Feb 12th, 1829 Aged 72 years & 16 days.3 Oft confused with Pvt. Levi/6a Brooks, also a Revolutionary soldier but of the Concord line, who was born the following year at Westminster, MA.
