Capt. Thomas/2r? Brooks was born circa 1658 (g.s.). By location and chronology he is likely a son of Thomas/1r of Newport, although this is unproven. Both Thomases were of Newport, and each had a daughter Hannah noted in Friends records (birth, in the case of the elder Hannah, and marriage in the case of the younger).2
6 May 1679, Thomas Brookes was admitted "freeman of towne of Neuport."3 Thomas Brooks signed a petition to the King, 29 Jul 1679, as an inhabitant of Narragansett City.4 5 Jul 1687, William Read of Newport, for £65 current silver money of New England, paid by Thomas Brookes of Newport, mariner, sells one mansion house and all the lands belonging, in breadth S.E. and N.W. sixty foot and S.W. and N.E. fourty foot, lying in Newport, bounded S.E., N.E. and N.W. by the streets of the town, and S.W. by land in the possession of Thomas Paine.5 Grand juror, Newport, 13 Dec 1687 and again in 1688.6
     He married, (2? 3?), say 1712, Mary (–?–).2 She died 16 Jul 1723 at 35 (g.s.), and he 19 May 1730, a. 72 (g.s.).2,7 They are buried together in the Common Burial Ground, Newport.2,7
His will, proved 7 Sep 1730, the first page of which is lost, mentions sons Thomas and Samuel (under 21) and daughter Hannah Brooks (under 18). Friends Benjamin Stanton & ____ Wanton, both of Newport, executors. Witnesses: David Wiatt, ____ __anning, James Martin.8
