James/1 Walker

       James/1 Walker, Savage conjectures, was the youth of 15 who came to New England with his sister Sarah, 17, on the Elizabeth, William Stagg, master, which sailed from London in Apr 1635, arriving at Boston in midsummer. The Walker siblings, says Banks, traveled with John Browne, 40, as "servants to William Brasey, linen draper of Cheapside and John Brown, baker."1,2 James Walker's name is found on a list dating from about 1643 of the first purchasers of Rehoboth, MA, where his allotment, "now John Fitche's," was valued at £50-0-0.3 24 October of that year his share was declared forfeited to the town for "non-fillment of conditions."4 One of 58 men drawing lots for a division of the woodland between the plain and the town, 30 Jun 1644.5 Listed in the 1645 register of Rehoboth landowners.6 He became an inhabitant of Taunton, where he was a man of influence, being constable in 1652, frequently selectman, and representative 1654 "and oft. aft."2 He married (1) Elizabeth Phillips, daughter of William Phillips.2,7 She died at Taunton in Jul or Aug 1678, "aged 59."2,8 There he married (2), 4 Nov following, Sarah/2 Richmond, daughter of John/1 Richmond, and widow of Edward Rew.2,9 James Walker died 15 Feb 1691 (g.s.).10 Buried in Walker Cemetery, Taunton.10
     In 1672, James Walker and his brother-in-law John/2 Richmond were appointed to buy land from the Indians.11
