Thomas/2 Bateman was born at Toppesfield, Essex, in 1614.3 Presumably came with his father and the rest of his family in the Winthrop Fleet, 1630.4 One of the earliest arrivals at Concord, MA, he was admitted a freeman 18 May 1642.5,6 There he settled, per an 1835 reference, "easterly of Humphrey Hunt's."7 He married (1), by 1645, Martha/2w Brooks, daughter of Henry/1 Brooks.8 Signed a town petition to the General Court for tax relief, 14 May 1645.9 22 Aug 1653, signed the "Agreement made and agreed upon by the town and church of Concord concerning the college at Cambridge" for support of Harvard College.10 Jan 1654, witnessed the will of Robert Best of Sudbury.6 Allowed, with others, 2 Jan 1654, to buy additional land at a subsidy: That some particular persons shall have some inlargement, whoe are short in lands, paying 12d. per acre, as others have don, and 6d. per acre, if the towne consent thereto….11 One of 9 signers of an agreement, 7 Mar 1654, for the division of Concord into districts, and appointed an overseer of the new North Quarter, in which he lived.11
Thomas Bateman, "now of Concord," received half of his father's estate in his will dated 24 Mar 1656.12,6 Loving brethren Moses Wheate and Thomas Bateman (both brothers-in-law) were named overseers in the will of Thomas/1 Fox of Concord, 25 Jan 1657/58.13 Witnessed the will of Rev. Peter/1 Bulkeley at Concord, 26 Feb 1658.6 The 1666 tax list finds him "near R. French's," North Quarter, where his taxes were abated on 7 lots comprising 246 acres.14
His wife Martha died at Concord 3 Aug 1665. There he married (2), 27 Jan 1668, Margery (Margaret) Knight.15 There he died 6 Feb 1669.16 Will proved 1670.6 He left an estate of £348 to his sons Thomas, Peter, John and "Ebenezer" (Eleazer), all born prior to 1659, says Shattuck.1
Shattuck, following Farmer, says Thomas Bateman had a brother William who arrived with him at Concord early, then removed to Chelmsford, "where his descendants have since lived." However, no William, and few Batemans, are found in Chelmsford records. Ridge calls Thomas "the surviving son."7,6,17
An jury inquisition at Charlestown, 18 Sep 1630, "Vpon vew of the dead Body of Willm Bateman," found that the deceased "dyed by Gods visitacon." Was this William a son of Sgt. William/1 Bateman, and thus Thomas/2's brother? If so, who was the Willm Bateman who gave evidence to the jury?18
