James/4 Coggeshall was born 5 Feb 1712 at Newport, RI.2 There he married, 25 Nov 1736 (Friends rec.), Hannah/3r Brooks of Portsmouth, daughter of Capt. Thomas/2r? Brooks and Mary (–?–).1 There she died 6 Dec 1780.3,2 He died at East Greenwich 12 Oct 1789 at age 77.2 Buried in the Coggeshall Cemetery, Newport.2
"Mr. Coggeshall, for many years resided in Newport, R.I., and was on a visit to some of his children when he died. He had eleven daughters; many of them were of more than ordinary height, and he was often heard pleasantly to remark that he considered himself more favored than most men 'as he had sixty feet of girls.' His house was situated on a corner lot, the entrance to which bore the name 'Coggeshall Gate.' It was about a quarter of a mile from the Coggeshall Cemetery."2
4 Apr 1775, James Coggeshall, "believing it to be contrary to true Christianity, and the divine injunctions of the author thereof, to hold mankind as my property, or continue her in a state so as to be subjected to slavery after my decease," manumitted his Negro woman Meriah. His declaration, recorded in Newports Friends' records, was witnessed by son-in-law John Gould.2
"The father of Ruth Coggeshall Greene, was a Quaker and as it was against his religious belief, did not take part in the Revolutionary War. He remained at home during that time, and while the British were in possession of Newport he was forced to have a certain number of the Officers quartered with him."2
