       Isaac/2 Warner was born in 1645.¹ He married, 31 May 1666 Sarah Boltwood, daughter of Robert Boltwood.¹ He died before 20 Dec 1696, when his widow m. (2) Dea. John Loomis of Windsor.¹ Of Northfield and Deerfield, MA.³

       Mary Skinner was born 22 Sep 1667 at Windsor, CT.¹ She married (1), 19 Nov 1685, Nathaniel/2 Harmon of Suffield, CT, son of John/1 Harmon and Sarah (–?–).² He died at Suffield 2 May 1712.² She married (2), as the 2d of his four wives, 1713, Dea. John/2 Hanchet of Suffield, son of Dea. Thomas/1 Hanchet and Deliverance Langton.^3,4 She died at Suffield 17 Sep 1730 at age 62.³

       Dea. Thomas/1 Hanchet married, as her 1st husband, Deliverance Langton.¹ Had a grant of 60 acres at Suffield, CT, where he lived on High Street, 1688.² One of 34 qualified voters at Suffield's first town meeting, 9 Mar 1681/82. There he died 11 Jun 1686.^3,4
     "Deacon Thomas Hanchet, probably brother of John of Boston, was in Wethersfield 1649, and his son John was born there at that time. Deacon Thomas removed to New London 1651, was there three years, was at Northampton 1660, was Deacon 1668, removed to Westfield, thence to Suffield, where he died … He is the ancestor of all of that name who have dwelt in Suffield."⁵

       Mary/2 Burt, 2d so-named, was baptised 13 Apr 1635 at Harberton, Devonshire, and emigrated with her parents to New England. After a brief stay at Roxbury, they settled at Springfield in 1640.¹ In a precursor of things to come within the family, Mary's sister Abigail/2 was ordered, 11 Jan 1640/41, well whipped by Springfield's constable for giving promises of marriage to John Hobell (Hubbell), despite her father's prohibition, and Hobell was whipped for offering and attempting fornication with Abigail.²
     Mary Burt married, 18 Oct 1654 at Springfield, MA, William/1s Brooks. At the time of her marriage she was recently (Jan-Feb?) delivered of an illegitimate child by another man; 10 months after the marriage she presented William with a son of his own, the first of their 16 children.^3,4
     Charged by Mary as the father of her first child, Sgt. Samuel/2 Wright Jr. requested a jury trial, held 24 Mar 1654. The verdict of the Jury: Wee fynd Samuel Wright Junior guilty of committinge wickedness with Mary Burt in having the use of her body 3 severall tymes, whereby wee fynd him to be the father of the said child:Whereuppon the said Samuell Wright was ordered and adjudged to be the reputed father of the said child: And for his evill behaviour therein to be whipped with 12. stripes on the naked body well layd on: And to pay the charges of the Court, and towards the mayntenance of the said child to pay after the rate of One shillinge four pence per week makeing payment every month, dureinge the tearme of Seaven yeares, and at the end of Seaven yeares to pay Forty shillings towards the putting of the child forth to be an apprentice and in the meane while to give good Security vizt a bond for 4£ with Sufficient Suretyes to perform this Order.⁵
     And Mary Burt for her great wickedness was ordered and adjudged to be whipped on the naked body with 12 lashes well laid on as also to keep her said child: And whereas shee hath been found guilty of Comitting wickedness with Joseph Bonde Shee was adjudged to be well whipped a Second tyme with 10 lashes about a month after the first whippinge, according as shee shal be called forth, except shee doe before pay into the Constable as a fyne to redeeme her Second whippinge the Sum of Thirty shillings.
     Samuell Wright Junior was punished the 28th of May 1654 and Mary Burt by reason of inability to come forth and for other causes was protracted till [blank] of May following [between 29-31 May 1654] at which tyme shee received her punishment and to redeeme the second whippinge shee paid the fyne of 30s above mentioned.⁵
     The records do not state whether the child had been born at the time of the trial, but the chronology of events across multiple households makes this almost certain (cf. footnote 6).^5,6 The trials of Abigail and Mary Burt constitute two of only three fornication trials on record during the Pynchon magistracy at Springfield.⁵
     16 Sep 1670, Reice Bedortha complained against William Brookes and Mary his wife for theire abusing of his son Joseph Bedortha by Bad language flinging a stick at him and using Reproachfull words Threatning expreshons and Taunting speeches. William Brooke and Mary his wife appeared, and though they partly denied the charges, magistrate Pynchon found them "both guilty of a very great Misdemeanor Touching that Busyness." He fined William 20s. and witness fees, and Mary 10s.⁷ In 1686 they removed to Deerfield, where William died 30 Dec 1688 and she on 31 [town rec; 30, Burt, Warren & Eno] Aug following, at age 54.⁸
     The will of her mother, 27 May 1684, left Mary "an heifer."⁹

       Henry/1 Burt was born circa 1595 at Harberton, Devonshire.¹ He married, 28 Dec 1619 at Dean Prior, Exeter, Devonshire (licensed 23 Dec), Ulalia/1 Marche.^1,2 Henry Burt was taxed on land at Harberton in the subsidy of 1624.¹ Compiled the inventory of his mother's estate, 8 Jul 1630.¹ "He emigrated to New England probably in the spring of 1639 and probably with his wife and 7 children, 2 children having died in England."¹
     5 Nov 1639, the colony's treasurer was ordered to allow £8 to Roxbury for Henry Burt's "losse by fyer."^3,4 By 1640 he moved to Springfield.^1,5 There he was chosen one of the first selectmen, 1644, and served in that office 10 years.⁶ In 1648 he was "clerk of the [training] band" (militia), and was admitted a freeman of Springfield 13 April that year.^6,7
     "The civil office with which Mr. Burt's name is most prominently connected was that of 'y^e Clarke of y^e Writs,' held under the decree of the Colonial General Court, whereby 'It is ordered in every town one shall be appointed to grant summonses and attachments in all civil actions, etc.' He was appointed to this office in 1649, and held it continuously until the time of his death, being succeeded in it by Lt. Thomas/1 Cooper, who was confirmed by the County Court at Northampton on March 31, 1663."⁸
     "Other duties came to him, such as serving on committees to lay out the bounds of the plantation, to grant lands to the settlers, and to conduct religious services on Sunday in the absence of the minister."⁶ Henry Burt, “y^e Clarke of y^e Writts”, died at Springfield on the evening of 30 Apr 1662, and was buried 1 May.^9,10 His Springfield homestead, acquired of Hugh/1 Parsons after the latter's witchcraft trial, passed to his son Jonathan. "This homestead of Jonathan Burt's was where Broad street now is."¹¹
     Henry Burt died intestate, but a nuncupative will was admitted to probate.¹² 29 Sep 1662, We Thomas Cooper and Jonathan Burt doe testify, That after Henry Burt now deceased had disposed of part of his estate to his Son Nathaneell, the said Henry had Such expressions as these. vizt. that what estate he had then left should be at his wifes dispose as witness our hands.¹³ An inventory of the estate, prized at £181-14, was returned to the court 11 Sep 1662.^13,14 Henry's wife Ulalia died at Springfield 29 Aug 1690.^15,16
