       Samuel/4k Brooks, according to his pension application, was born circa 1754. According to vital records, however, he was born 19 Mar 1761 at Buxton, ME.2,1 There he married, 27 Dec 1785 (Cong. Church rec.), Rev. Paul Coffin officiating, Lucy Berry of Buxton.3,4 Samuel's 1790 census household at Buxton included himself and one other male over 16, three males under 16, and one female.5 He settled at Porter by 18 Jun 1803, when he was enumerated in the third school district.6
     7 May 1818, Samuel Brooks of Porter, "aged about 64," made an affidavit for the purpose of obtaining a Revolutionary soldier's pension. In it, he states that he enlisted [at Buxton] 25 Feb 1777, for three years, in Capt. Jabez Lane's company, Col. Nixon's regiment, Gen. Nixon's brigade of the Massachusetts line, and served his full term. He reenlisted, May 1780, for three years in Capt. Nathaniel Emmons's company, Col. Tupper's regiment, Gen. Patterson's brigade of the Massachusetts line, in which unit he served about 18 months, and was then transferred to Capt. Kellum's company "in the Mass. Regiment," in which he served about five months. This company was reassigned to Col. Vose's regiment, in which he served till the "last of December AD 1783," when he was discharged at West Point.7,8
     Samuel's pension was approved, 6 May 1819, at the rate of $8/mo., and a certificate of pension issued.9 25 Jul 1820, Samuel Brooks of Porter, now "aged 54 years" [sic], signed by mark an additional declaration in court at Paris, ME, stating, "I have neither real or personal estate & I am owing the sum of forty Dollars." He states he is "a husbandman which I am unable to pursue by reason of age, I am lame and weak."10 He died at Porter 14 Apr 1825 at age 64.11,8 The name of Samuel Brooks 2d, a. 62, Mass. line, died April 1825, was included in an 1835 list of Revolutionary pensioners in Maine, followed by mention of unnamed widow of Samuel Brooks, a. 75, res. Porter.12
     His widow Lucy of Porter was added to the pension roll of Maine, 17 Dec 1848, at the rate of $96 per annum.9,8 6 Apr 1855, she applied for bounty land based upon his wartime service, and asked that the land certificate be forwarded to their son Asahel of Porter.11
