       Lt. Zachariah/5w Brooks was born 20 Apr 1742 at Woburn, MA.1 Orphaned in 1751, he and his brother Seth/5w were placed under the guardianship of Isaac Snow the following year.2 In 1759, at the age of 17, he was impressed for service in the French and Indian War, remaining all winter in Canada at that time. He served again as a soldier in 1762.2 He married, 13 Oct 1763 at Woburn, his 3d cousin Hannah Wilde, daughter of Ebenezer Wilde and Hannah/4 Fowle.3 She died at Woburn 24 Nov 1778.4
     A tailor per deed of 1774, he was a private in Capt. Jonathan Fox's company, which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775, to Concord and Cambridge, and was credited with 21 days service. He served as sergeant, Capt. Jonas Richardson's company, Col. James Frye's regt; receipt for advance pay dated Cambridge, June 9, 1775; also, company return [probably Oct., 1775]; enlisted April 29, 1775; also, order for bounty coat or its equivalent in money dated Camp at Cambridge, Dec. 22, 1775; also, Lieutenant, Col. Thomas Nixon's Regt; Continental Army pay accounts for service from ___ to April 27, 1778; reported cashiered by general court-martial April 27, 1778; also, 1st Lieutenant, Capt. Elijah Danforth's (8th) Co., Col. Nixon's (4th) Regt; muster roll dated Van Schaick's Island Sept. 2, 1777, and sworn to in camp near Stillwater; appointed Jan. 1, 1777; also, Col. Nixon's Regt; 94 days rations allowed between July 1, 1777, and Oct. 22, 1777; rolls dated Albany; also, same regt; 31 days rations allowed between Nov. 30, 1777, and Jan. 1, 1778; roll dated Albany; also, Capt. Danforth's Co., Col. Nixon's regt; muster roll for Nov. and Dec., 1777, dated Albany; reported furloughed for 2 mos., from Dec. 18, 1777, by Gen. Gates; also, same Co. and Regt; muster roll for Jan.-April, 1778; reported discharged April 27, 1778.
     Sewall's History of Woburn, 569, mentions service only "before the year 1777," according to Johnson.5,6,7
     Zachariah Brooks married (2), 21 Jun 1780 at Woburn, Susanna Watts of Woburn, daughter of Samuel Watts and Susanna Swan.8 Their 1790 census household at Woburn was counted as Zachariah, two males under 16, and three females.9 He died of consumption 5 Feb 1792, age 49.10,11 Buried in Woburn's First Burial Ground.12      Described as "Gentleman", he died intestate. His estate was represented as insolvent; account allowed 6 Nov 1794.2
