Elder Edward/1 How

M, #8159, (say 1590 - 24 June 1644)
Last Edited4 Feb 2009
Elder Edward/1 How married, as her 1st husband, in England, Margaret (–?–), with whom he had 2 daughters.1 They emigrated to New England, where he became one of the largest original proprietors of Watertown, MA.1 A ruling elder of the church at Watertown, he was admitted freeman 14 May 1634.2 He probably himself built, and thereafter was joint partner with Matthew Cradock of London in, the town's first mill, located on 2 acres of land between the Charles River and "Mill Creek," extending from the mill up to a stone dam. The elder's 40-acre homestead was also in that vicinity. He sold his interest in the mill 19 Aug 1635 to Thomas Mayhew, though Mayhew apparently failed to perform his end of the transaction, as a bond and mortgage to Mayhew in the amount of £400 were included in the inventory of Elder How's estate at his death.3 Elder Edward/1 How was selectman in 1637, 1639, and 1641–43, and deputy to the General Court, 1642–43.1 He died at Watertown 24 Jun 1644.4 His will (NEHGR 3:77) mentions his wife Margaret and daughters Sufferana and Anne.1
Bond reproduces his signature on p. 303.1
